MYSTERY OF LIFE
Anita Hawley

I want to share this beautiful poem written some years ago by
my multi-talented wife Anita. So often we forget what really matters in life.

PS. This is a throw back to the days when poetry still rhymed
and actually had meaning.
What is this mystery of life that haunts me?
Could it be the SPRINGTIME of our days?
When young men's hearts rebel at what they feel,
And yet are trapped by pretty girlish ways.
As lovely butterfly comes forth from ugly gray cocoon,
So comes a whispered longing to their boyish heart,
That something sweet and new will happen soon.
What is this mystery of life that haunts me?
Could it be the SUMMERTIME so fair?
When young gay blade turns bright Prince Charming,
And nesting feelings show he really cares?
There in her eyes he finds the joy of living,
He longs to have her for his lovely bride.
And so he takes her to his heart forever,
Where she will walk a comfort by his side.
And so they raise their babes together,
Watch them bud and blossom fair.
Teach them how to trust in Jesus,
Help them lisp their baby prayer.
So with tender ties they bind them,
Heart to heart in perfect love,
And these years they share together,
Will be fashioned from above.
What is this mystery of life that haunts me?
Could it be the AUTUMN hours?
He has made her pathway roses,
Planted in her garden flowers.
They have lived and loved together,
Watched their birdlings leave the nest.
They have gone through fire and furnace,
And now they welcome quiet rest.
What is this mystery of life that haunts me?
Could it be the WINTER snows?
Two old hearts together beating,
As the sunset deeper grows?
Many leaves have fallen 'round them,
They've known happiness and fears.
They have shared each other's gladness,
And they've wept each other's tears.
What is this mystery of life that haunts me?
Binding hearts their life long through?
Come my darling I will tell you,
This mystery of life is you.
