WHO IS DRIVING?

A Prophetic Dream Given the Night of March 17, 1996

Don Hawley

I dreamed a luxurious black limousine was driving along a city street. It was a stretch limo with several seats, and the windows were tinted black. Things seemed to be going well until it became obvious that the automobile had quit making forward progress, and was sliding backward faster and faster.

The passengers had all been in the back seat chatting without concern. Suddenly they detected their danger and noted that no one was in the driver's seat. One passenger managed to crawl across the intervening seats, and got behind the wheel. He jammed on the brakes, but there was no response. I didn't see the outcome of the matter, but there appeared to be no happy or successful resolution.

THE INTERPRETATION

The luxurious limousine represents modern organized religion, "rich and increased with goods," and in its own mind, " in need of nothing". The darkly tinted windows point to the lack of spiritual vision, without which "the people perish." The driver of God's church is to be the one and only faithful Guide, the Holy Spirit, who alone can lead us into all truth. The fact that no one was driving indicates that the Holy Spirit is not in control of the denominations today.

The denominations feel that with their numerical "church growth," they are doing fine. However, "he that is not with me is against me," and they actually are losing ground. Going backward through traffic is dangerous, and so is the present course of the denominations. Human leaders vainly are trying to direct the course of events, but they have neither the wisdom nor the power to do so successfully. Unfortunately, such leaders either aren't aware of the need for the Holy Spirit to take charge, or simply refuse to turn the reins over to him.

I didn't see the outcome, but I think it is clear. The future for God's people is not in denominationalism. Human organizations will continue to go their own way with some apparent effectiveness. However, God is calling out his Body for the final movement prior to Christ's return. It may be that some members of the Body still have their name on a denominational membership roll, but those who are following the leading of the Holy Spirit increasingly will see the insignificance of such an arrangement. Many will be led to sever such ties entirely in protest over the way the Holy Spirit is being treated.

The vital question is, "Who is at the controls of your life?"
