A NEW WIND BLOWING

A Prophetic Dream Given the Night of November 25, 1995

Don Hawley

Note: This prophetic dream was given to confirm a message I had preached earlier in the day. Although originally addressed to a particular congregation, I believe it has a wider application.

A previous prophetic dream (See "Worldwide Fire") dealt with choosing between the force of the north and the force of the south. This present dream dealt only with accepting or rejecting activity taking place "in the sides of the north." As before, the dream was so intense that it woke me out of sleep.

One interesting sidelight. When the Lord gives a dream it's important to write the matter down immediately, as details can fade as is the case with ordinary dreams. Because I had to catch an early train, my host was to tap on my bedroom door at 6:45 a.m. I awoke from my dream at 6:20 a.m., which left me just 25 minutes to write notes on all I had seen. I finished the notes just two minutes before the tap on the door! Except for the perfect timing, I would have had to rush for my train and try to reconstruct the dream some time later.

THE DREAM

This time I was looking out the north window of a building rather than a house. There were a number of people inside, including children. Suddenly I saw a fearful disturbance in the sky. It was a dense black tornado, but a very strange one. Instead of one large spout, this storm had several spouts. These spouts were narrow all along their length; not wide at the top and small at the bottom as is normally the case. Several of these black tentacles were darting around in the heavens, an awe inspiring sight. Finally one of them touched down on a hill to the north, and I saw it chasing people down a mountain path.

Although the windstorm was frightening to behold, it was also fascinating, and I had trouble looking away. When the lowest tentacle had nearly engulfed the people on the path, I finally turned and called for all in the building to hurry to the basement. Having been in a real tornado, I knew that the safest spot is in the southwest corner of a cellar, and the occupants seemed to be heading in that direction. In this case, however, the storm was approaching from the north and I encouraged all to line up against that wall. We felt special concern for the children in our midst.

Not much time elapsed between the sighting of the tornado and its bearing down on the building. I awoke before the matter was resolved.

THE INTERPRETATION

This time the former threat from the human element in the south was ignored, and all attention was focused on the unusual happening in the north. The activities of the force in the south were insignificant compared to what God ("in the sides of the north") was doing. Once again a force of nature was used to illustrate the power of the Lord, and once again it was so awe-inspiring as to create a certain amount of fear. Joel the prophet quoted God as saying in the last days, "I will show wonders in the heaven above," and what I saw in my dream was truly a wonder.

I believe the building and its inhabitants represented the congregation to whom I preached on Sabbath morning. The people on the path may have been those who have shown no interest in joining with any part of the Body of Christ. Those who won't fall on the Rock and be broken, will be crushed when the Rock falls on them.

Church members are inclined to seek safety in their denomination (south); in fact, many are told that to have one's name on the church books is salvation, while anyone who leaves the "ark" is doomed to be lost. That is a lie. Our only security is in Jesus Christ (north). Before our Savior returns denominations will become immaterial.

The tornado was akin to the mighty wind that rushed through Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost. I'm sure many were fearful of that holy wind, and many more were frightened by the behavior of Christ's followers as a result of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Strange things happened that day. Don't think for one moment that the people were sitting quietly in decorous little groups as the disciples sedately shared a message in the various languages represented. What took place was so vitalized, even strange, that the Spirit-filled men were accused of being filled with ordinary spirits; already drunk at nine in the morning.

Another, and final, fulfillment of the Joel prophecy is upon us today. The dream was unresolved; we must as individuals decide how we will react to what God is doing in the world today.
